The Near Islands

The Near Islands are three islands about 5-7 km off the Pattaya coast. These islands consist of Koh Sak, Koh Khrok and Koh Larn. There are two dive sites on Koh Sak, east and west. Both sites are particularly good for students as they are in sheltered bays. They are also a favourite for those divers who have been out of the water for a while and wish to have a relaxing dive to refresh their skills.

Koh Larn is the largest of the near islands and therefore offers more dive spots. The underwater life is varied and on lucky days we can see turtles. It is also not unusual to see cuttlefish. Shark Point is a good place to spot Bamboo Sharks, hence it’s name. However, they are nocturnal creatures so you will have to search under rocks and corals to see them.

Koh Larn Vak is better known as the ‘underwater restaurant’. This was built with some questionable engineering and actually sunk before it was completed. There are some vertical concrete conical formations that have become a haven for coral and are predominantly good for buoyancy skills.

Koh Larn Laem Tong is otherwise known as ‘Golden Bay’.

The corals extend down to 25 metres and have some very nice hard corals around 7 to 10 metres. This is a good dive site where blue spot rays are virtually guaranteed.

Koh Krok is an ideal place for drift diving when conditions allow, as it is along the tidal flow line. This site has a maximum depth of around 11 metres. Anemones and clown fish are in abundance and there is a good chance of seeing the resident turtle.

The Far Islands

These consist of three islands about 15 km off Pattaya.  It takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to get to them, but the dive sites are worth the trip. Koh Rin Bay is part of the main island and this site goes down to a depth of about 12 metres. It is well protected by currents and can make a nice relaxing dive.

Koh Rin South Rock offers plenty of fish life, including barracuda and moray eels. This site has beautiful coral life down to about 16 metres. There are coral whips, hard and soft corals as well as good invertebrate life.

Koh Rin North Rock does not offer as much coral life as south rock, but has lots of rock formations that are homes to eels and sharks. This site has good diving down to about 14 metres and is excellent for searching for razor fish and pipefish.

Koh Man Wichai has two dive sites, firstly ‘The Wall’, which is a 7 metre high wall of coral and runs from 9 to 23 metres. The other is ‘The Fingers’, which is a set of rocks outstretched from land to sea to a depth of 12 metres. The rocks are formed like a giant hand with five fingers. The hard coral and fish life are very good.

Koh Phai, also known as ‘Bamboo Island’ is controlled by the Thai Royal Navy, so there are restrictions on the use of the beaches. There is some good diving off the south of the island and the small sheltered bay is ideal for beginners.

The main attraction is the Khram Wreck. This is a decommissioned US warship that was sank in 2003 by the Thai Royal Navy.

Samae San

Samae San offer some of the best diving in the area. Most people that go diving at Samae San go to dive on the Hardeep wreck, but both Koh Chan and Koh Chuang are very good coral dives in themselves.

The Hardeep wreck is an Indonesian freighter that sank in 1943. It has had plenty of time to adapt to a wonderful underwater realm. The fish life includes Butterfly-fish, Jacks, many varieties of Angelfish, Queenfish, and an abundance of juvenile Barracuda.

The wreck lays on it’s starboard side, making it an interesting dive angle. The engine room still has the crankshaft intact and some large open cargo holds allow a lot of light to enter.

Submarine Rock is a rocky ridge with barrel sponges. Marine life includes turtles and large rays.

Koh Chan is south-east of the wreck. Literally hundreds of Yellowtail Jacks will encircle you as you descend down the soft corals. You will find various eels and Tawny Nurse Sharks, sleeping under rocks.

Koh Chuang is a large island that is south of the wreck. The maximum depth is about 12 metres. The coral life is good with an occasional turtle and lots of small fish to see.
